Mega Millions in California
Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game that offers huge jackpots and exciting prize opportunities. The game is played in 45 states, including California, as well as the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands. California Mega Millions follows the standard rules and prize structure of the multi-state game.
How to Play
To play Mega Millions, you must select five numbers between 1 and 70 for the white balls. Then, choose one number between 1 and 25 for the gold Mega Ball. You can choose your numbers manually or use a 'Quick Pick' option to have the lottery terminal randomly generate your numbers.
Drawings
Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday night. The drawings take place at WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia, at 11:00 PM Eastern Time (8:00 PM Pacific Time).
Winning Numbers
The winning Mega Millions numbers are available on the official California Lottery website, as well as through authorized retailers and media outlets. You can also check your numbers using the Lottery mobile app.
Mega Millions Prizes
The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $20 million and increases with each drawing in which no one wins. There are nine prize tiers in total, ranging from $2 for matching only the Mega Ball to the jackpot for matching all five white balls and the Mega Ball. The estimated jackpot is an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years. Players may choose a one-time cash option instead.
Megaplier
For an extra $1 per play, you can add the Megaplier option to your Mega Millions ticket. If you win a non-jackpot prize with the Megaplier, your prize will be multiplied by 2, 3, 4, or 5, depending on the Megaplier number drawn before the Mega Millions drawing. The Megaplier number is drawn from a pool of numbers.
Claiming Prizes
California Mega Millions prize claim rules apply. Prizes up to $599 can be claimed at any authorized California Lottery retailer. Prizes between $600 and $4,999 can be claimed by mail or at any Lottery District Office. Prizes of $5,000 or more must be claimed at a Lottery District Office.
